Huge Saving On FSC Certification

We continue to see FSC® Chain of Custody Certification as a requirement of many of our customers.

For many print providers, the cost and discipline required in order to be part of the supply chain is difficult to justify, but that may no longer be true.

As a member of PIASD, regardless of your company size, we can provide technical support (control forms, logo approval, and planning) as well as the audit through well-recognized agencies (Rainforest Alliance or SCS) for a single fee at discounted pricing - including travel and FSC® fees.

So if you are currently enrolled in a Chain of Custody program, or contemplating FSC® certification, contact Karen Fulton at 858.800.6900 or karen@piasd.org. We’ll be glad to outline our “Small Group” program as well as our just created “Large” printer program, and provide you significant savings! Many of our members have saved thousands of dollars a year through this program

Green - Nature's Neutral

The human eye literally sees more green than any other color…With a multitude of greens so plentiful in the surrounding world, there are many moods the green family can convey… Lying in the center of the color spectrum between the composure of blue and the activity of yellow, green is known as the great harmonizer. Often described as a restful shade, physiologically green affects the nervous system, causing us to breathe slowly and deeply, helping the heart to relax by slowing the production of stress hormones. Used lavishly whether in open fields or a park in an urban environment, the serenity of nature’s greens can quickly bring about a sense of balance and harmony. The continued influence of the green family led to the addition of a wide array of green shades into the 210 new color additions to the PANTONE Fashion, Home + Interiors palette. By Laurie Pressman.

Managers Get Personal To Promote Safety!

Keeping employees safe in the workplace is one of a manager’s most important responsibilities, but it has to be a team effort. To encourage your employees to embrace safety practices, implement these crucial strategies:
- Focus on likely injuries. Preventing machinery mishaps may be a worthwhile goal, but if your workers are predominantly injured by falls, that’s where you should place your effort. Provide information designed to improve safety across the board, yes, but emphasize those areas that have already resulted in injuries, or government fines, for your organization.
- Appoint safety “ambassadors.” Rather than relying on emails and signs, ask an employee to help explain the issues to your workforce. Maybe a member of your team has suffered a workplace injury; he or she would make the perfect spokesperson for the importance of being careful and complying with safety regulations.

PIASD provides its members with information that will help them comply with various federal and state safety regulations. The Illness and Injury Prevention program is a PDF fill-in road map to comply with this important program.

Packaging May Pack a Trillion-dollar Punch for Print

Business planning news flash: The year 2020 is less than five years away. What will your firm look like 61 months into the future? Will it still be around? Will it offer wide-format printing? And what about printing packages? Wide format and packaging remain two growing segments of the otherwise flat print marketplace. So whether you’re a digital, offset, flexo, or hybrid printing firm, opportunities abound. Click here to read more.

Referrals - Still An Important Tool

One of the most powerful selling tools is a customer referrals. Customers like nothing better than networking and identifying successful solutions being offered to similar organizations. Putting a customer reference on a website, or providing references to existing prospects, is a smart thing to do.  Obtaining customer references to prospect and identify new opportunities should be a part of any sales plan. For more thoughts on this topic from sales consultant Joe Rickard, visit this site.

USPS Shelves Five-Day Delivery

In a recent Dead Tree Edition blog, it was reported that Deputy Postmaster General Ron Stroman announced at a meeting of the Mailers Technical Advisory Council (MTAC) that five-day delivery was not going to be part of the USPS restructuring going forward.

“In response to the questions as what the USPS has compromised on in the legislative discussions with its stakeholders, Stroman said that 5-day delivery was one of the things the USPS dropped and that other things that used to be on its list are no longer there,” said the bulletin, which is only available to members of the multi-industry Association for Postal Commerce (PostCom).

Five day delivery has been a political landmine in that many small and rural communities abhor the idea and put pressure on their Congressional representative.  Along with the expanded online delivery role that USPS is taking with weekend delivery, this comes as no surprise.

All California Businesses Must Display Current Labor & Safety Posters

All California businesses must display up-to-date labor and safety notices where all employees can see them to be in compliance with federal and state laws.

The 2015 all-in-one posters no longer meet the federal and state 2016 requirements. Updated posters include the following important revisions:
1/15 CA Access To Medical and Exposure Records
6/15 CA Healthy Families Act of 2015/Paid Sick Leave
6/15 CA Family and Medical Leave/CFRA/Pregnancy Notice B
1/16 CA Minimum Wage

Also please note that if you have not updated your Industrial Welfare Commission Wage Order poster since 2014, your wage order is no longer current and you should post the new version immediately to be in compliance.

Some companies may also be required to display additional notices depending on their operation, such as forklift safety, fire extinguisher use, safe lifting, and blood borne pathogens.

You can pre-order posters from PIASD at a special rate for members. For example, the cost for the 2016 all-in-one poster is $24.50, which includes postage and sales tax.

But understanding shorthand isn’t just important for the messages you send. There are social media acronyms that you’ll find in business meetings, in marketing or sales reports, and from your IT team. To be the best at your job, you’ll need to know all of the most common abbreviations.

Sprout Social created this tool as a resource for mastering social media acronyms. Share this infographic with your marketing and content teams. Print it out. Send a group email. Encourage them to keep these acronyms in mind.

“Who Are Those Guys?”

It’s a great line from Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid as the two charming criminals (played by Paul Newman and Robert Redford) are trying to escape from a very dedicated set of lawmen.  It also may be the question folks will be asking about the Paper & Packaging Board (P+PB).

If you are not familiar with this group, don’t worry. They’re the organization which will administer the “Paper Check-off” revenue from the assessment levied on a variety of paper, including: printing, writing and related paper; kraft packaging paper; containerboard; and paperboard.  This will be the first year we begin to see advertising targeting consumers ala the “Beef. It’s What’s for Dinner” campaign. Although the $30+ million raised by the “check-off” seems like a lot of money, it’s paltry in comparison to the $200 million raised by the Beef Council.

Per Mary Anne Hansan, the organization’s executive director, over the past year P+PB has conducted market research to help the organization target the message.  We should  be beginning to see the fruition of years of planning, to shine a positive light on the paper and print industry.
